There are numerous reasons why small software organizations are eager to implement CMMI Level 2 processes. Studies have shown that adherence to the processes described in the CMMI models result in decreased project costs, increased schedule predictability, improved product quality, increased customer satisfaction, and a positive return on investment. Additionally, many federal and commercial software contracts are now contingent upon the vendor having been formally appraised at CMMI Level 2 or above.
Unfortunately, few small software development organizations that start down the road toward CMMI Level 2 ever reach their goal. Studies conducted by the Software Engineering Institute have shown the organizations with little experience in process improvement projects typically require 18 to 24 months to reach CMMI Level 2. For many small software organizations, the time, effort, cost, and culture shock associated with implementing CMMI Level 2 processes and preparing for an appraisal can be overwhelming. We know. We've been in that position. But along the road leading to our successful CMMI Level 2 appraisal , we discovered some unique ways to overcome the obstacles that have tripped up so many small companies.
